Water – connecting past and present

I have always been drawn to water.

Perhaps it’s because water provides a connection to life itself?

And to our ancestry.

You see, we are not just made of the stars.

When we die we don’t just return to the earth as dust.

We also return to the earth as water.

Our body is made up of roughly 60% water.

In some organisms water makes up 90% of their mass!

When we die the water content of our body returns to the earth either directly through burial or as water vapour following cremation.

Consider the cycle of water.

Travelling from the earth’s surface back into the atmosphere.

Falling as rain, sleet, snow.

Hanging in the air as mist or fog.

Flowing in rivers and streams.

Running into the sea, reservoirs, lakes, ponds and puddles. Nourishing life.

Returning once again to the atmosphere where the cycle continues.

In the finite amount of water on earth this life-giving liquid has previously been through many organisms including our ancestors, ancient forests, all kinds of flora and fauna and creatures of the world.

They are, right now, flowing through our veins, our tears and all our bodily fluids.

We too will become part of this water cycle.

We too will become the rain, mists, rivers, reservoirs and seas and, perhaps, making physical contact with future generations?

It gives rather a different perspective when we immerse ourselves in these beautiful, natural waters as part of our self-care.

Or as we walk through mists and rain.

The next time you sense water on your skin linger there.

Allow yourself to be touched by it.

Held by it.

And, perhaps, sense your ancestors reaching out to you and connecting with you

Water is precious – in so many ways.
